Classical Piece of the Week: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

*I've got a new playlist on Youtube for all my Classical Pieces of the Week! You can check it out here!*

I went to watch The Nutcracker last year, and I must say, I wish I had appreciated it just a little more, because I do realize now just how fantastic the whole ballet- and the music, was!

One of the pieces I particularly liked was the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by (evidently) Pyotr Tchaikovsky. It has got a really mysterious, yet gorgeous feeling to it, and the dance number that goes with it is absolutely stunning.

This piece features a celesta (a cross between a piano and a glockenspiel) and a harp. Both add a great sense of eeriness to this piece, yet it still maintains the Christmas-y feel that this piece emits.

If you intend on watching the video, you must certainly also watch the ballet. I know that I am no expert in anything to do with ballet, but the dancer in the video just moves with such grace and finesse!

If you'd prefer a version without any clapping and stuff, I'd recommend this video.

  1. I love the Sugar Plum Fairy variation and the music too! As a dancer and ballerina, I love classical music too :) Which ballet company did you see perform the Nutcracker?

P.S. That is so awesome that you do ballet; I've always admired the poise and finesse of a ballerina!

    2. Lol thanks! Violin players are cool too :D Every ballet needs an orgestra or the show wouldn't work
