Human Laziness (Is this the Faith of Humanity?)

Every time I think of human laziness, I think of the movie Wall-E. Those who have watched that movie know what I'm saying. For those who don't know: Humans are forced to live in a spaceship because the Earth is too polluted. In the spaceship, the humans' mode of transportation is not walking, instead they're in these mobile chairs with screens to chat with people and stuff. Here's a clip to show you what I'm talking about.

Humans have become more and more lazy over time, yet a lot of people don't seem to realize it because sometimes the signs are very subtle. Remote controls, frozen meals, lamps that turn off with the sound of a clap; all of these things are factors in why humans are so lazy. Now I know what you're thinking: these items are just making our life easier, and that doesn't mean that we're lazy. Yes, I know what you mean, but think about it, humans are constantly finding new ways of making life easier, and if these things are only step 1, what will be step 2, 3 or 4?

Everybody's heard about the iPhone 4S and how it has this software called Siri. Siri is basically like your super intelligent assistant that can answer your questions or send an e-mail- all with the power of your voice. When I first learned about Siri, I was like, that's so cool, a software that can actually talk and answer my questions! But now, I think, are humans so lazy to the point that there has to be a computer that answers your question and sends your text messages? Are we so lazy to the point that we can't do these things ourselves?

I'm not saying that every item is a contribution to us being lazy, it's just that I feel like we could live a more purposeful and enriching life without some of these items. If we continue to live like a bunch of kings and queens, I think that eventually, humanity will turn into that clip from Wall-E.

This is reminding me of a chapter from the book, Le Petit Prince. So le petit prince is in the desert, and he meets this guy that is selling these pills that will quench your thirst for a week. So if you take this pill, you won't have to drink water for a week, which saves you from the hassle of pouring water, then swallowing it, ultimately saving you more than 50 minutes in a week. Maybe at the end, what humans are really trying to produce are things that will save time. Maybe this is what this is all about. Saving time. Yet look at the world now, it's like a rush. People are so obsessed with saving time that they don't appreciate what's around them anymore. Slow down, living in the moment could be the meaning of life. (Got this quote from a lululemon bag, lol)

Ok, before I get too off track of our ultimate subject, I guess all that I want to say at the end is that humans are getting more lazy because they want to save time. Clapping your hands to turn off the light requires less time than reaching over and pushing the off button. But people, this is not what life is about. Won't you feel more satisfied if you did something with your own energy instead of letting an electronic device do it for you? The world is slowly deteriorating into a place where less consumption of energy= happiness and more time. But we can change this, because we have the power to do so. And with our drive and willingness, this world still has a chance of improving into a place where laziness is only an afterthought.

Mini update: Wow, I just found this clip on YouTube showing a brand new design by Honda. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Click here to view the video.

  2. Wall-E reference! I loved that movie! Anyways, you're right! New invention, easier way of doing things are perfect things in the society. But it has it's cons as well as pros. And I think Siri is very scary, actually. :P And I agree. Why not "live in the moment"? What's the rush? This post is totally educational and enhancing as well. It makes you think what the future would be. I hope not like in Wall-E. >.<

  3. Hi Grace! This is an awesome post. You are so right--humans ARE getting lazier and lazier over the years. I used to think that Siri was really cool, especially right after my mom got the iPhone 4S but then I started to realize the same thing that you did; that why not just type out the text instead of saying it into the phone? Yeah, it's easier, but it's so lazy! I love this post. :)

  4. Great post, Grace! I can admit, from my own experience, people are getting lazier with each passing day... I think that's one of the main reasons I opened my blog.. I was thinking like.. I wasn't doing anything important all day long.. I haven't seen the movie Wall-E, but I'll give it a try :)
